What is an Objective?

The problem you shall investigate is broken down into a list of objectives. An objective is something you shall do within the time frame of your degree project. Typically, you have a list of ojectives to achieve. An objective shall be understandable, not too small or too large, and possible to define when it is completed or not.

Example 1

We want to compare five sorting algorithms bubble sort, quick sort, selection sort, insertion sort and merge sort to see which one is the fastest. To do this we can calculate the execution time of each algorithm when sorting some data. The objectives can be formulated as:

• Implement bubble sort
• Implement quick sort
• Implement selection sort
• Implement insertion sort
• Implement merge sort
• Implement code for running a sorting algorithm and measure execution times
• Run an experiment where the execution time for each algorithm will be measured. A randomly generated list of 100 000 integers between 1 and 10 000 will be used.

Example 2

You want to investigate the differences between traditional hard drives and SSD disks for collecting forensic evidence. The objectives can be formulated as:

• Do a litterature review about forensics on traditional hard drives on Google Scholar.
• Do a review on tech articles about forensics on traditional hard drives on Google.
• Do a litterature review about forensics on SSD drives on Google Scholar.
• Do a review on tech articles about forensics on SSD drives on Google.
• Synthesize the findings from the literature reviews and outline the differences between traditional hard drivs and SSD drives.
