About the course

The course aim is to give the student knowledge in advanced routing­ and switching technologies as well as in WAN protocols. After completing this course the student should be able to apply this knowledge and, with a certain degree of independence, be able to design and implement a LAN and WAN environment.

The course will be a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical implementation. Laboratory work with mandatory attendance will be held covering some of the theoretical parts of the course. In these lab work, the students will be challenged, in group or by themselves, with a problem that should be solved. The content of the course is:

Course contents:

  • l advanced and basic switching in a local area network (LAN) l advanced IP addressing techniques
  • l WAN technology and terminology
  • l basic concepts in network security
  • l basic concepts of wireless networking.

Examination:

As stated by the syllabus:

The course is assessed with the grades U,3,4 or 5.
The grades 5 (five), 4 (four), 3 (tre), and U (fail) are given on the theoretical exams. The grades G (pass) and U (fail) is given on the practical exams and labs. To be eligible for a final grade in the course the student is required the minimum grade of 3 on the theoretical exams and G on the practical exams.

The theoretical parts of the course is tested with two web based and one written exam and the practical part of the course is tested with two practical exams.

The syllabus also states that “Active participation in the lab work is mandatory”, this means doing the weekly web based mini tests for each chapter to check your understanding of the material (60% correct answers to pass) plus handing in lab reports/assignments when given a task to do so during the lab.
