Workshop on Knowledge Contribution

Prerequisites

  • Literature review article found on my research area
  • Some related work

Repeat (Application area)

Other fields of research or areas in which CS is applied should be described.

  • May provide opportunities to study CS in these areas
  • May provide motivations.
  • May provide context.
  • May provide interesting requirements, and constraints.
  • May provide opportunities to study data from those applications
  • May provide opportunities to talk to CS experts in those areas
  • May provide users (however make sure your study is CS)

Repeat (Research area)

An area within Computer Science

  • Within CS -> studies published aimed at those communities
  • Suitable for your program profile -> Connected to course
  • Has research potential -> Active research published (within a few years) upcoming
  • Meaningful for you
  • Start by looking at the forefront of the techniques you encounter.

Should lead to a research gap, “a motivation to look deeper into this area”. Something not well explored yet.

In what world will my “solution”/answers live in?

  • Competitions:* (If these are not research -papers, put them in the background) From existing solutions: What is the competition?
  • What existing solutions exist today?
  • What are the current answers?
  • How do they compare?
  • How are they evaluated? -> Methodology inspiration for a comparative study

Defining Research gap revisited

  • Sometimes mentioned in Literature reviews / Future work
  • Conflicting studies!
  • build on top of someone else
    • lack of empirical evidence
    • new audience
    • new data (eg, new subjects)
  • Write related work with
    • Summarize
    • Positioning
    • Motivation (show the gap)

Motivations ( Relevance)

The work we do should be of use to some population. Think of who?

Generalisable: Can your findings be used for more than the specific case you investigated? New knowledge

Find arguments for your work

  • Scientific - Knowledge contribution
  • Societal power- Of practical use to benefit the society
  • Ethical
  • Economic -
