Important things facing the final exam

The final exam will be focused on the lectures and labs, especially the understanding part. This means the configuration parts of the course won’t be a part of the final exam, that will only be a part of the labs.

About the first labs and the seminar (the Kalmar lab)

At the seminar Marcus and I said we would write something about our impression and thoughts about your work on the first lab. Things being as they are it slipped from our minds and into the dark chambers of forgetfulness. But nothing stays hidden forever so here are my thoughts (and then I hope Marcus will share his with you in some way):

Great job by all who attended the Kalmar lab! I think you did a good days work. You came well prepared, showed good work ethics and an ability to adapt to the situation as it unfolded. It was a real joy working with you.
Those of you who presented on the Friday seminar also did a good job. It felt like you understood what you had done. Don’t worry if you are one of the students who got a question you couldn’t answer – hopefully you learned something and that is really all I care about at this point.
Based on this experience my impression of you as a group is that you are fast learners, eager workers and creative thinkers. As a teacher that is really all you can wish for … so thank you for that!

As for the rest of the course I hope Marcus is tormenting you to the best of his ability and in a few week we will cook up a really nasty written exam where you get the chance to really shine. Until then, keep up the good work!

News about tomorrows lecture

I’ve caught a cold, a severe one. This means I can’t hold tomorrows lectures (if I were able to speak for more than 10 minutes, that would be a step forward). Anyway, I’ve put up a recording on Management and monitoring that you can watch, plus I’ve uploaded lab 2 to you can that with that. Lecture 6 on troubleshooting is also uploaded, but no recording yet. I’m hoping to do it this week when my voice wants to cooperate.

In seminar, you are supposed to make a short presentation about your assignment one experience, how your assignment evolved from your design draft to its final state in Kalmar, what you could or couldn’t do to achieve the objectives.

Seminar is a part of grading and attendance is mandatory.

Assignment 1 Submission

In lab, I observed that everyone successfully implemented router-on-a-stick or SVI routing with VLANs.

However as for the OSPF part for inter-office routing, redundancy and finally the internet configuration, only 2 groups succeeded.

By 19th of April 23:59, I am expecting your final reports to hk222dk@student.lnu.se for Assignment 1. Please include

Circumstances that made you change your initial design, and a skecth of your new design in lab
The things that you could not implement or success in lab and why.
The things you could implement on your own or with extra help from teachers but you still couldnt reason why it really works.

I wish we had a lab like Kalmar’s in Vaxjö and you could work on your designs till you can reason about every single command you issued. Instead, I will evaluate your responses and may come up with an extra complementary seminar in Vaxjö in which we can emulate real Cisco equipment operating system in PC, after discussing with Marcus and Thomas.

For those who already submitted their work to me about Task 1 and Task 2 by the soft deadline (15th of April), final report can consist of Task 4 itself only.

For those who have not submitted Task1 and Task2, your full report in one document is expected.

19th of April 23:59 is the hard deadline.

Food in Kalmar

There’s a restaurant at the Kalmar Nyckel campus if you don’t have to bring food for the day. The restaurant usually serve standard lunches with two alternatives (of which one is vegetarian).
